Should You Enroll Your Child In Full-Day Preschool?

Blog

Preschool allows kids under the age of five to socialize with other children under the supervision of preschool teachers. Preschool can be considered a hybrid of play-focused daycare and early childhood education. There are half-day and full-day options for parents looking for preschool for their children. The right type of program for your family will depend on many things, such as your child's temperament and your family's needs. Here are some things that you should consider when deciding whether to enroll your child in a full-day preschool program:

1. Do you require all-day childcare?

One of the key reasons that some parents choose to enroll their kids in full-day preschool is the need for child care. Many households have two parents who work full-time and therefore cannot watch their children during the workday. Full-day preschool classes can keep your child safe, happy, and enriched while you're away at work. You can drop your child off at preschool before heading to work in the morning and pick them up after you finish for the day.

2. Is your child potty-trained?

Young children are at an age when they must learn to do many new things, such as learning to go to the bathroom when they feel the urge. Potty training can be a difficult time for parents and kids. Preschool may be stressful for kids who are not yet fully potty-trained. Before enrolling your child in a full-day preschool course, consider whether or not they can reliably use the bathroom on their own. If your child still has accidents or is not yet fully potty-trained, you can look for a preschool program that accepts children who are still working on this life skill.

3. Do preschools in your area offer rolling enrollment?

Before enrolling your child in a full-day preschool course, you might want to check your calendar. Some preschools only admit children at the beginning of the standard school year. However, other preschools are willing to accommodate children who are ready to begin school on alternative schedules. You can look for a full-day preschool that offers rolling enrollment so you can send your child to school whenever they're ready.

4. Do you want to give your child a head start in their schooling?

In many states, schooling is not compulsory until a child reaches kindergarten age. However, there are many benefits to enrolling your child in school early. Preschool can help kids transition away from staying at home full-time in a fun and gentle way. Full-day preschool programs can help kids build skills that will serve them well in kindergarten. Kids will learn to behave themselves, sit attentively, get along with others, and listen to their teachers.

Benefits of Educational Choice

I recently made the decision to move my kids from their public school to a private religious school. It isn't that I thought that the public schools were doing a bad job of teaching the basics, but I wanted them to have more than just basics. I wanted them to learn about our faith -- not just Sunday at church, but how it affects our lives every day. I felt that a religious school could help them see our religion not as some abstract thing that only happens in church, but as something that is relevant to the math and spelling words and science that they study every day. I know that I'm lucky to have the choice to educate my kids this way. If you're looking for something more from your children's education, you should also look into exercising your right to choose the direction of your child's education.
