What Can An All-Boys Catholic School Offer?

Blog

Teenage boys develop rapidly, growing in mind and body with each passing day. A good education can shape your son into an honorable and knowledgeable young man. Your son can find an excellent education at a private school. Here are four things an all-boys Catholic school can offer young men:

1. Freedom From Secular Ideas Of Masculinity

Teenage boys are on the cusp of manhood. However, the question of what it means to be a man has many different answers, depending on whom you ask. Many secular ideas of masculinity are harmful and opposed to God's word. Fortunately, at an all-boys Catholic school, your son will be allowed to flourish outside this paradigm. Teachers will instill good Catholic values of manhood and masculinity into the young men they teach.

2. Classes Tailored To Boys' Needs

It's common for girls to do better in school than their male counterparts. This disparity doesn't speak to any innate difference in ability; instead, it suggests a difference in the way boys and girls learn. Boys tend to be high-spirited and full of energy, which can make settling down and focusing difficult. An all-boys private school understands that boys have different academic needs. The classes at an all-boys school will be tailored using current science on learning styles, so your son will have every chance to succeed academically.

3. Strong Male Friendships

All teenagers need good friends. During adolescence, children cling more tightly to their friends. Their families are still important, but teenagers are trying to figure out who they are and how they fit into the world. Boys especially need strong male friendships during this time. An all-boys high school is the perfect place for your child to befriend other young men. All-boys schools allow young men to develop their own culture, away from the influence of the opposite sex. This can lead to a wonderfully cooperative environment where boys support and encourage each other.

4. Religious Role Models

Boys need role models to look up to. Role models allow boys to expand their sense of what's possible, giving them something to aspire to. However, role models must be chosen carefully. As a Christian parent, you naturally want your child to emulate moral, healthy behaviors. An all-boys private high school will expose your child to many Christian role models, both current and historical.

Staff members are chosen for their teaching abilities and moral character, so any teacher would make a fine role model. Boys will also learn about the saints of the Catholic canon. Saints make excellent role models, and learning about their lives can give young men hope and courage for the future.

Benefits of Educational Choice

I recently made the decision to move my kids from their public school to a private religious school. It isn't that I thought that the public schools were doing a bad job of teaching the basics, but I wanted them to have more than just basics. I wanted them to learn about our faith -- not just Sunday at church, but how it affects our lives every day. I felt that a religious school could help them see our religion not as some abstract thing that only happens in church, but as something that is relevant to the math and spelling words and science that they study every day. I know that I'm lucky to have the choice to educate my kids this way. If you're looking for something more from your children's education, you should also look into exercising your right to choose the direction of your child's education.
